Homemade Batman Costume

Make your own homemade Batman costume by focusing on four main features – the mask, symbol, cape and clothes – some constructed from items you may already have. Choose either the classic TV version of Batman with blue, gray and yellow or stick with the more-modern Batman's black and yellow.

Batman's Mask

  • Things You'll Need:

    • Black or gray craft felt
    • Black or gray thread
    • 1/8-inch elastic
    • Disappearing ink sewing marker
    • Scissors
    • Sewing machine

    To Make the Mask:

    • Step 1: With the disappearing ink sewing marker, trace the shape of Batman's mask onto felt. The mask should cover the top half of the face and have pointed tips above either side of the brow for bat ears.
    • Step 2: Cut out the mask. Repeat so you have two identical pieces.
    • Step 3: Hold one end of the 1/8-inch elastic on one side of the mask and measure so it fits snugly around the wearer's head when attached to the other side of the mask. Cut the elastic to that measurement and pin it to both sides of one of the mask pieces.
    • Step 4: Place one mask piece on top of the other and pin together so that ends of the elastic are sandwiched between mask pieces.
    • Step 5: Sew around the outer edge of the mask with a 1/8-inch or less seam, backstitching over the elastic on each side and at the end.
    • Step 6: Place the mask on the wearer's head and use the sewing marker to mark eye holes.
    • Step 7: Cut out two ovals for eye holes, making them large enough for good visibility.
    • Step 8: Sew around each eye hole with a 1/8-inch or less seam, backstitching at the end.

Batman's Symbol

  • Make two, one for the chest and one for the cape.

    Things You'll Need:

    • Craft felt in yellow and black
    • Scissors
    • Craft glue
    • Disappearing ink sewing marker

    To Make the Symbol:

    • Step 1: With sewing marker, trace the bat symbol onto black craft felt, making the symbol approximately 6 to 7 inches wide.
    • Step 2: Cut out the symbol and lay it on top of yellow craft felt.
    • Step 3: Trace an oval around the bat symbol with a 1/2-inch border.
    • Step 4: Cut out the yellow oval.
    • Step 5: Glue the black bat symbol on top of the yellow oval. Let dry.
    • Step 6: Repeat to make a second symbol.

Batman's Cape

  • Things You'll Need

    • 1 yard each of black and yellow OR gray and blue costume fabric
    • Thread in coordinating colors
    • 2 pieces of sew-on fabric hook and loop fastener tape, 2 inches by 3/4 inches
    • Scissors or rotary cutter
    • Tape measure
    • Sewing machine

    To Make the Cape:

    • Step 1: Fold the black (or blue) fabric in half lengthwise.
    • Step 2: At the top of the fabric, measure in 5 inches from the fold.
    • Step 3: Draw a line from your 5-inch mark to the bottom corner of the fabric at the outer edge.
    • Step 4: Cut along this line. You will now have a piece of fabric 10 inches wide at the top and about 42 inches wide at the bottom, depending on width of fabric. If the cape is for a child, adjust the top and bottom width for the child's shoulder size and height.
    • Step 5: Repeat with the yellow (or gray) so you have two equal pieces.
    • Step 6: On the yellow (or gray), sew hook side of fabric hook and loop fastener to right side of fabric 1 inches from the top and 1 1/2 inches from either side.
    • Step 7: On black (or blue), center the Batman symbol and pin in place. Sew around the yellow oval 1/8 inches or less from edge.
    • Step 8: Place the black and yellow (or blue and gray) fabric right sides together and pin. Sew around edge using a 1/2-inch seam allowance and leaving a 6-inch gap on the bottom of the cape for turning. Backstitch at the beginning and end.
    • Step 9: Turn the cape right side out using a pencil to gently push out corners. Turn under the edges of the hole and pin to close. Top stitch around entire cape with a 1/4-inch seam (this will also close the hole).
