Homemade Cat Costume

Save

Instead of buying a cat costume, try making one. A craft or fabric store will have the materials needed for such a project. A homemade cat costume is an inexpensive way to dress up for a costume party or school play.

Materials

  • You may already have some of the clothing at home; if not, try an inexpensive store such as Target or Walmart. You will need a black hooded sweatsuit, two black socks or black gloves, plastic headband and a long sock (for the tail). Purchase the following items at a craft or fabric stores, black felt, cardboard, scissors, pencil, batting or pillow stuffing, hot glue or tacky glue, large safety pins, face paint or makeup (for whiskers and nose). You do not have to be a black cat; you can pick any color.

Steps

  • Draw two cat-ear triangles on your cardboard and cut them out. Cover the ears with the felt, then glue felt to cardboard ears. Attach your ears to the plastic headband. Do this by gluing the bottom of the cat ears directly to the plastic headband. You will make your tail by stuffing the long sock with batting or pillow stuffing and pinning it to the seat of your sweatpants. Put the gloves or socks on your hands for cat paws and draw whiskers and a nose with face paint or makeup.

Tips

  • If you don't have a hooded sweatsuit, you can use a turtleneck and leggings or leotard and tights. Also, you can jazz the costume up a little by wearing a matching feathered boa. You can buy boas at any fabric or craft store. If you do not want to use a long sock for your tail, you can use the extra ear material and make a tube. However, this will require a little sewing. After you make the tube, stuff it with the batting and pin to your bottom.
