The Best Way to Remove Hair Glue

Save

Hair glue is used to attach hair extensions and other hairpieces to the head. If you use extensions, hair glue is an alternative to weaving the hair and is less noticeable. Hair glue is not as strong as super glues, but it is made quite strong to keep the hairpieces from just falling out. When it's time to remove hair glue from your hair, you have several choices.

Glue Removal Products

Hair glue removal solutions work to an extent, but they don't always remove all the glue. If using a solution, pull the glued hair away from the rest of your hair as best you can and apply the solution directly to the glued area. Rub the glue into the hair with your fingers until you feel it starting to separate, then slowly pull on the extensions until they are free from your hair. Remove the excess glue from your natural hair with a fine-toothed comb, then wash your hair with shampoo and conditioner to remove the solution and loose bits of glue.

Shampoos are available to remove hair glue. Shampoos work much like removal solutions, but also may not be the best option.

Conditioner

Conditioner will remove hair glue. Wash your hair as normal with a detangling shampoo and warm water to soften the glue. Apply a deep conditioner to your hair and let it sit for several minutes. Once it has stayed in the hair for a while, rinse it out and slowly pull out the extensions.

When the extensions are removed, run a fine-toothed comb through the hair to catch any remaining pieces of glue. Repeat the process, if necessary.

Oil

Remove hair glue with oil. Wash your hair as usual. Apply a natural oil such as olive oil or orange essential oil. Warm the oil by blowing your head for one minute with a hair dryer set on warm, not hot. Slowly pull out the extensions. Use a comb to get out the glue bits, and wash your hair again to remove the oil.

With either conditioner or oil, clean the comb as you go, so glue isn't redeposited in your hair. Clean the extensions as well, before you use them again.
