Acne can effect people differently, and can vary in severity. People who suffer from severe acne can have a difficult time healing their acne, especially when they use harsh chemical products that constantly irritate their skin while trying to clear it. Luckily, at-home natural remedies can effectively treat and eliminate severe acne, without damaging the skin.
Cleansing the Skin
Cleansing skin with severe acne should be done as gently as possible to avoid irritating or aggravating skin which is already inflamed. Because severe acne is caused by an overproduction of oil on the skin, which can then become infected with bacteria, it is necessary to cleanse the skin using oils that will reduce oil production in the skin. One such method is to use a combination of olive and castor oils. Pour 1/2 tsp. of olive oil and 1/4 tsp. of castor oil into your hands, and gently massage them into the skin using circular motions. After approximately two minutes, lay a steaming washcloth across the skin, allowing the steam to penetrate and open the pores. Once the cloth cools, wipe away the remaining oils. Over time, using this method will trick the skin into producing less oil, thereby reducing the severity and frequency of acne breakouts.
Exfoliating the Skin
Exfoliation is an important part of keeping the skin clear and healthy. This is because when the skin is exfoliated, the dead skin is buffed away and pores of unclogged. When the pores are not routinely clogged with oils, bacteria on the skin is reduced, resulting in less acne. A natural exfoliator that will not irritate the skin is baking soda. Baking soda is a soft powder typically use for baking, but also useful for killing off acne-causing bacteria. When combined with water it forms a paste that can be massaged gently onto the skin. After 20 seconds of massaging, rinse the skin well with water. The skin should be exfoliated with baking soda once per week.
Treating the Skin
Once the skin is cleansed and exfoliated, you can treat the individual blemishes using a natural alternative to benzoyl peroxide creams; tea tree oil. Although benzoyl peroxide can clear skin, it can sometimes irritate severe acne and can burn the skin. Tea tree oil has been shown to reduce acne as well as benzoyl peroxide, and can be used on the skin up to three times per day. Make sure to dilute the tea tree oil, as it can sometimes be too strong to be used full strength. To dilute tea tree oil, add 3 drops of oil to 1 tsp. of water, then apply it to the acne-prone areas.
