Home Remedies for Heel Spurs

Heel spurs are uncomfortable protrusions found in the bottom of the foot. They are caused when the ligament that runs through the sole of your foot is overworked. Runners and those on their feet for many hours throughout the day are more likely to suffer from this condition. Home remedies for heel spurs have proven to be effective against the pain and swelling associated with the ailment, but if pain is prolonged or unbearable, it is important to consult your doctor.

    1. Massage

      • Rubbing your feet will help reduce the pain and discomfort associated with heel spurs. A massage can be given to the aching area as needed. For best results, press your thumb firmly against the painful heel and knead the area in a circular motion, rotating between each foot every three to five minutes.

      Heat

      • Applying heat to a heel spur will help reduce the inflammation and improve blood circulation in the area. It is recommended that you wrap your feet in heating pads twice daily, for 15 to 20 minutes each session. Be careful not to turn up the heat setting too high. It should feel warm, but not excessively hot to the touch.

      Avoid Going Barefoot

      • Walking without shoes is the most damaging thing you can do when you have heel spurs. Instead, shoes with a 1-inch heel, such as high heels or cowboy boots, should be worn. These types of shoes will shift your weight forward, relieving some of the pain in the heel. It is also appropriate, however, to be remove your shoes and rest your feet when possible.

      Elevate your Heels

      • Keeping your feet at a higher level than your heart will help with heel spurs. This helps reduce the swelling and inflammation related to the condition. The healing process will be sped up once the inflammation is reduced. At night, sleep with your feet propped up on pillows to help relieve heel spurs.
