Our hair plays an integral part in how we feel about ourselves and the confidence we have to face the world. If, for whatever reason, our hair is thinning or not as healthy as we'd like, it can be emotionally debilitating. Any natural method of assisting hair growth, like sea buckthorn oil, could be a safer method than using something that possibly contains harmful chemicals. The oil can typically be found as a shampoo or conditioner but there are also supplements available to help with hair growth.
What is Sea Buckthorn Oil?
Sea buckthorn (Hippophae rhamnoide) is a spindly tree or bush that bears distinct orange, yellow berries. This fruit-bearing tree is native to Siberia and the Himalayas; in Europe and Asia, where it grows in coastal areas, the fruit is popular for medicinal purposes. It does not grow in North America. The oil is extracted from the seeds or the pulp of the fruit, both of which are extremely high in fatty acids. It is known as a "super fruit" for its abundance of healing properties, whether taken as a supplement or applied to the skin or hair.
The oil from the berry has been used in Tibetan and Mongolian medicine for more than 1,000 years. Genghis Khan is said to have given the berries to his army to improve their stamina, giving it the name the "holy fruit of the Himalayas."
What Is Sea Buckthorn Oil Used For?
The oil is popular in the beauty industry, particularly in anti-aging treatments, because of its ability to restore, nourish and rejuvenate the skin.
Sea buckthorn oil has been used in Russia by cosmonauts to protect against radiation burns, as the oil is able to absorb ultraviolet rays. The scientific name means "shiny horse" and horses given sea buckthorn oil as a supplement have marked improvement in health and appearance, including stimulating hair growth.
Sea buckthorn oil is extremely rich in antioxidants and vitamins A, E and C, as well as amino acids. It is available as either oil or supplements. There are also soaps, shampoos, conditioners and hair masks containing the oil.
How Can Sea Buckthorn Oil Help Hair Growth?
Sea buckthorn oil is a natural way of encouraging hair growth. Extremely rich in nutrients and proteins, the oil nourishes the scalp and is believed to stimulate hair growth, as well as heal dry and damaged hair.
Chinese scientists, in 2009, discovered a human demodex parasite that lives off skin and hair follicles, causing problems ranging from rosacea, hair loss and premature grayness, to enlarged pores and acne. The parasites were found to feed off the nutrients from the skin. The oil kills the parasites that are believed to be the cause of some major hair loss and, in conjunction with the oils restorative properties, should lead to better hair growth.
Sea buckthorn oil shampoos, soaps and conditioners are used the same as any other skin care product: lather and rinse as usual. Hair masks are left on the scalp for a number of minutes, then rinsed out.
