Verizon Cell Phone Troubleshooting


Verizon Wireless is a popular company used by a great number of cell phone users. Occasionally, Verizon cell phone users will have problems with their phones ranging from reception issues to trouble charging batteries. While there are some problems that can be fixed without calling Verizon Wireless customer service, many issues eventually need to be attended to by a professional.

Reception Problems

  • No matter what style of phone you have, you may find that, on occasion, you have trouble with reception--calls either sound broken up, or you drop calls more than you usually would. The first thing you should do is dial a code that will update your phone with the locations of the nearest cell phone towers. This update is called "over-the-air programming," or OTA. To do this, dial "*228" on your phone, press send and follow the prompts. At the end of the update, you will be alerted by the automated system. Your phone will then automatically restart, or you can restart it manually.

Battery Issues

  • Sometimes, a battery won't charge or won't function correctly due to it being ruined. If you have had your phone for 2 or more years, it is likely you will need to replace your battery if your phone won't hold a charge. When the phone doesn't charge at all, there could be something wrong with the charging port; in this case, you should take the phone to a Verizon Wireless store and have it looked at by a technician.

    Another cause of battery failure is water damage. A phone doesn't need to be submerged in water for this to happen--even being in a moist area, such as a bathroom with a running shower, is enough to cause water damage in some phones. To check for water damage, take the battery cover off of your phone, remove the battery and locate the battery sticker--it will be round or square. The sticker will either be white, white with pink or red crosses, pink or red. If the sticker is white or white with pink or red crosses, there probably isn't any water damage, and you should take the phone to a Verizon Wireless store to be checked out. The phone likely has water damage if the sticker is pink or red. You can call your carrier to replace the damaged phone if you have cell phone insurance. If you have no insurance, you can either buy a new phone using your upgrade or at full retail price or call Verizon Wireless customer service to see what other options are available for you.

Trouble with Messaging

  • If you are unable to send or receive picture or video messages, call Verizon Wireless customer service to see if data is blocked on your phone line. Unless this feature is enabled, you won't be able to send or receive picture and video messages.

    Not all phones are able to receive picture and video messages, so you should check your phone's manual to see what capabilities it has. You can find a digital version online at the (see References).

Voice mail Issues

  • Two common voice mail problems are being locked out of your voice mail or forgetting the pass code and not being able to access your voice mail at all. If you find that you do not have the voice mail feature on your phone, call Verizon Wireless customer service to have them enable it. It is possible to have this feature turned off either by accident or by request. Basic voice mail is free, and you won't incur any charges by enabling it.

    Try entering "0000" if you find yourself locked out of your voice mail. This will work if you have not yet set up a voice mail pass code, but if you have chosen one and just forgot it, you will need to call Verizon Wireless customer service to have them reset the pass code for you.
