Age spots are also called liver spots, sun spots and lentigines. These spots pop up on the skin of older people because of long-term sun exposure. Brown spots mostly occur on the hands but they can crop up on the face as well.

    Why This Happens

  1. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, the sun causes melanin, or pigment, to collect in a localized spot and this results in the brown spots. If you have tried over-the-counter solutions on your age spots and they haven't worked to your satisfaction, perhaps you will have more success with home remedies.
  2. Lemon Juice and Apple Cider Vinegar

  3. Organicfacts.net notes that lemon juice is a good way to bleach out the brown spots. Apply it to the brown spots on your face twice a day. You should see results in a couple of months. Drink apple cider vinegar and this may result in a reduction of your brown spots. Put a couple of drops of vinegar in a glass of water and pour it down the hatch. If you can't stand the taste of the vinegar, add some honey. Organicfacts.net further recommends mixing equal amounts of apple cider vinegar and a blended onion and then applying this mixture to the brown spots. Results should be noticeable in five to six months.
  4. Sunscreen, Make a Paste

  5. Keep your brown spots covered when you are outside. If you don't, the spots will get even darker. Wear a sunscreen or a hat to protect your face.
Put sandal powder and rose water on your brown spots. This will result in a paste. Leave it on as you would a masque for 15 minutes or so. This is said to be effective in diminishing brown spots. Make a concoction out of rosemary oil, vinegar, radish and lime juice. Apply this to the dark spot. This cleanses and brightens the skin and may reduce brown spots.
  6. Castor Oil

  7. Grannymed.com (see Additional Resources section) recommends putting castor oil on your brown spots. Castor oil is not a bleaching agent, such as lemon, but it will improve the texture of your skin.
  8. Onions

  9. Chop up an onion, squeeze the juice out of and dip a cotton ball into the juice. Put this on your age spots, according to Danielle Briones of Docshop.com (see Additional Resources).
  10. Aloe Vera

  11. Consider using aloe vera on your brown spots. Aloe vera has healing properties and it will help even out your complexion.
  12. Vitamin E

  13. Apply vitamin E oil to your spots. In addition, you may opt to take a vitamin E supplement. Vitamin E is considered an anti-oxidant. It fights free radicals, such as smoke and pollution.
  14. Try This Mixture

  15. Docshop.com (Danielle Briones) suggests using this home potion to reduce brown spots: Mix together ¼ cup of organic yogurt with 1/8 cup of organic apple cider. Add the juice from ¼ of a lemon and 1 tbsp. of aloe vera gel. Apply this concoction to your face. Leave it on your face until it dries. Afterward apply a lightening solution such as hydroquinone (which is found in skin care products) or some more lemon juice and let it dry. Follow this with a moisturizer.
  16. Consult With Your Physician

  17. Generally, these dark spots are benign and don't pose any problems other than that they may not be aesthetically pleasing. However, these spots can also be indicative of nutritional deficits and impaired liver function, according to Homeremediesweb.com. If, however, your spots are changing in texture and color or increasing in size, you need to point this out to your physician.
