Wedding columns add an elegant touch to the front of the church and offer a distraction from any sound equipment or clutter that must be left on the stage or platform. Columns can be wrapped in vines, decorated with flowers or draped with tulle to coordinate with the wedding theme. Unfortunately, not all churches have columns available. If your vision of a perfect day includes wedding columns surrounding where you'll say "I do," you may have to do some searching.
Craft stores are a great place to start looking for wedding decor of all kinds. Most craft stores offer a full section of wedding items including centerpiece ideas, flowers and wedding program kits. Many stores also offer wedding decoration rentals--including columns and arches.
Call the craft stores in your area and ask about wedding rentals. Make a list of all the stores that offer columns for rent and go visit each store in person--even if there are two stores from the same chain. Ask to see the columns. Most likely, the store employee will show you a picture of what is available, but be persistent and ask to see the actual items. You do not want to find out on the night before your wedding that the columns are the wrong color or looked taller in the photos.
When you find the right columns, put down a deposit and reserve them immediately. Some stores will decorate the columns for you as well, so discuss the options. Ask to pick up the columns at least two days before the wedding. This will give you time to correct any mistakes that may occur.
Many churches keep a closet full of wedding decor available for their brides to use. Some churches hold these items specifically for their church members and weddings held on location, but some churches do allow for outside rental, provided they do not have a wedding scheduled at the same time.
Call around to the churches in your area and ask if they rent wedding columns and other decorations. If you live in a big city, start with the churches closest to the location of your wedding and work your way out. For those that have decorations, ask to visit the church at a time convenient for the church secretary, who will likely be the one to show you what is available. Churches that rent out their decorations usually have a reservation form to fill out. You will need to make a down payment to hold the pieces you would like to use.
Party Supply and Rental Stores
You might think of party supply stores as places to get Transformer plates or a Barbie pinata for your child's birthday party. As far as rentals go, many people think party rental stores offer only bouncy houses, tents and folding tables. In reality, many party supply and rental stores actually offer a good selection of wedding decorations including wedding columns.
The downside to party supply and rental stores is that they usually charge more than a craft store or church will charge. But remember, you get what you pay for. Because parties are their business, they will have a much larger selection.
