Mother Nature Costume Ideas

A mother nature costume is an ideal choice for any woman, and especially fitting for a pregnant woman, a mature woman, or a plus-sized woman. A mother nature costume is also a good idea if you are looking for a green earth friendly themed costume. This homemade costume idea gives the wearer an in-command persona that she can use to entertain those around her.

Base costume

  • To make a mother nature costume, begin with a base costume. Options for the base costume for mother nature are a long flowing dress, a swirly broom skirt and peasant top, a long cocktail dress, or a comfortable pants lounging outfit. Another option is to recycle and old costume using anything that has flowing fabric such as a fairy costume, any kind of goddess costume, or even a medieval costume. The idea is to wear something flowing, light and airy. Choose a light or earth-tone color such as natural beige, green or light brown.

Costume alterations

  • Purchase silk vines and flower vines from the dollar store. Have someone put on the costume for you, put it on a dress form, or hang it so that you can pin the vines and and flowers all over the dress. If the base costume is disposable, you can hot glue the flowers to the costume and use a few safety pins to hold them in place. You can carefully sew the vines in place with a few stitches here and there or use safety pins inside the costume if you plan to undo the costume later for other uses.

Accessorize the costume

  • Make a wreath out of vines to wear on your head or find a very long wig and fill it with flowers. Purchase small animals for your costume, including a bird perched on the shoulder and animal slippers. Use gold glittery face paint as makeup. If you know anyone that does face painting, have them paint your face with flowers. Use a long piece of tulle tied around the waist making a train that you can fill with flowers and animals. This is a great addition to a mother nature costume made with a pants outfit.

  • For a more grown up version of the mother nature costume, use a flesh-colored body suit and place flowers and vines strategically to cover your body parts. Some pregnant women have made mother nature costumes that included the nude belly painted as the earth. A mother with a new baby could sew flowers all over the baby's blanket or jacket.
