Activities in Delaware to Do With Kids

Delaware is an easy drive to Baltimore and Philadelphia. However, there's no need to leave the state if you're looking for things to do with kids. The choices vary from watching tigers to learning about military aircraft to discovering shipwreck gold. Your child could even learn how to ride horses. The second-smallest state doesn't lack activities for the whole family.

Delaware Museum of Natural History

A dinosaur gallery is just one of the attractions at the Delaware Museum of Natural History in Wilmington. Large skeletons of dinosaurs like the Tuojiangosaurus and Yangchuanosaurus bring to life what kids are learning in school. Other displays include birds, mammals and shell exhibits. A mile-long nature trail behind the museum takes you through woodlands and wetlands.

Brandywine Zoo

For live animals, check out the Brandywine Zoo in Wilmington. The 150 creatures include Siberian tigers, bobcats and pygmy goats. It has programs designed for children 18 months to 6 years old. This includes an animal visit or a story.

Air Mobility Command Museum

The Air Mobility Command Museum has over two dozen former military aircraft on display. They range from fighter planes to helicopters. The museum, on Dover Air Force Base, also has exhibits like a model of a Korean War base operations center and a collection of air force uniforms. Children over 10 can participate in a flight simulator. Children 6 and under can get their pictures taken in a junior pilot's plane.

DiscoverSea Shipwreck Museum

The Discover Sea Shipwreck Museum on Fenwick Island preserves the area's maritime heritage. According to the museum, its collection of recovered shipwreck artifacts is one of the largest in the Mid-Atlantic. Among the 10,000 items are coins, gold and silver bars and weapons.

The Delaware History Museum in Wilmington houses a varied collection of items that relate to the state. For example, you could see a Revolutionary War flag captured by a British officer in Delaware. A 9-foot statue of George Washington greets you at the entrance.

Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village

The Delaware Agricultural Museum and Village in Dover takes you to the past. The Loockerman Landing Village is patterned after a rural village in the 1890s. You'll see a farmhouse, schoolhouse and a church.
