Home Remedies for Wisdom Teeth Pain

When wisdom teeth, the third set of molars, develop in early adulthood, they often are misaligned on the jaw or have other irregularities that affect adjacent teeth. In many cases, these problems lead to excruciating pain. Surgeons and dentists can provide pain medication and suggest surgical procedures as treatment options, but some home remedies can offer effective relief, too.

    1. Garlic and Onion

      • Garlic is the key to temporary relief from wisdom tooth pain or any toothache. Smash one garlic clove, mix it with a pinch of rock salt and place the mixture on your aching tooth. This quickly should provide relief. You also can chew the paste to help destroy bacteria that lead to decay of tooth enamel.

Another garlic remedy: Mix a few drops of garlic oil with 1/4 teaspoon olive oil. Dab a cotton ball in this mixture and place the ball near the affected tooth. Occasionally bite gently on the cotton ball to release more of the oil mixture. One caution: Do not fall asleep with the cotton ball in your mouth to avoid choking.

Chewing onion or placing a piece of it inside your mouth near the affected tooth also can help ease the pain, thanks to antibacterial compounds found in onions.

      Cloves, Lime and Bayberry

      • Cloves also are an excellent home remedy for toothache. Suck a piece of clove or apply clove oil directly to the affected tooth for almost instant relief.

You can buy bayberry bark powder online or in specialty grocery or herbal stores. Add half a teaspoon of table vinegar to 2 teaspoons of powdered bark of bayberry to make a thick paste. Apply this mixture to the affected area for pain relief.

      General Measures

      • Drink lots of fluids to flush solid food particles from the back of the mouth, where they can attract germs and contribute to infection. Frequently rinse your mouth with warm saline water to help relieve pain, prevent infection and keep at bay the bad breath that often accompanies wisdom tooth pain. You can buy saline water in a bottle or make your own by boiling 9 grams, or one heaped teaspoon, of salt in a quart of water.

Chew wheatgrass, available in grocery stores, or soak the herb in water and strain it to use as mouthwash. You also could use store-bought mouthwash for pain relief. Whichever type you choose, mouthwash will rinse away bacteria-attracting food particles from wisdom tooth crevices and help ward off infection that can cause pain.
