Proper Setup
When installing Outlook, you will be prompted and asked if you want to make Outlook your default email client. Select "Yes," and you then will automatically send your email messages through Outlook. Call your email service provider or visit its website and locate the incoming and outgoing email server addresses. Enter these into Outlook by clicking on the "Tools" menu option at the top of the main window, then selecting "Account Settings." Once the Account Settings window opens, enter your name, other account information, and the server addresses.
Getting Around Outlook
Again from the top of the main Outlook window, click on the "Go" menu, and a drop-down menu will appear with options to select between mail, calendar, contacts, tasks and notes. You can also look to the lower left of the screen to find the four icons representing these. Simply click on any one of these and you will be taken to the window for that function.
Create a New Item
Outlook keeps things easy to remember by being consistent. Whether you want to create a new email, add a personal contact, schedule an appointment, or add a new task or note, you just click on the "New" menu option at the top of any of these respective windows. Immediately a new item will open and you can enter the details.
Sort Items for Convenience
In order to sort items in any category for viewing, click on the field label at the top of the navigation pane, then type a letter or number on your keyboard. Outlook will then sort all the items and display all that begin with that letter or number. For example, in the mail navigation pane, click on "To" and then type the letter "D". Outlook will sort and then display all the emails that you have sent to anyone with a name or email address that begins with the letter "D".
Quick Tips
To send and receive email messages manually, click on the "Send and Receive" button. Make new folders so that you can keep your emails, calendars, tasks and notes organized by clicking on "File," then select "New," and then click on "Folder." Finally, you can give Outlook a custom look of your choosing by clicking on "View," and then editing the "Current View," "Navigation Pane," and "Toolbars."
