Breast Cancer Awareness Month celebrates its 25th anniversary in October, its month of inception. This is 25 years of promoting breast cancer awareness, raising money to help find a cure, and providing support for women diagnosed with breast cancer as well as those who have lost loved ones to this disease. There are myriad activities taking place throughout National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, however it should be remembered that these activities take place year round in support of breast cancer prevention, research and cures.

    Ride to Empower

  1. This is a three-day bike ride, taking place in Red Rock, Nevada, between October 22 and October 25. It is hosted by the Breast Cancer Network of Strength, and it offers its participants various ride options to meet their abilities. Riders come from all across the United States, its purpose being to inspire and empower women and men who face breast cancer today. All funds raised go to support breast cancer research and to find a cure. There are various packages for riders to choose from, some of which provide riders with bike transport, food and lodging. In addition, the Network of Strength provides cycling guidance and fund raising support for its participants.
  2. Global Breast Cancer Conference

  3. Amid the fund-raising walks and runs, conferences are held to help raise awareness among the medical and scientific community. This is the purpose of the 2009 Global Breast Cancer Conference which takes place in Seoul, South Korea. The goal of the conference is to unite scientists, health-care providers, advocacy groups, and scientists in an effort to raise global awareness and increase understanding about breast cancer itself and the treatment methods currently being used.
  4. Lee National Denim Day

  5. This is the largest one-day nationwide fund-raising event for breast cancer and takes place on the first Friday of October. It began in 1996 when Lee Jeans began a simple mantra: One day, one cause, one cure. The theory is simple: On the first Friday of Breast Cancer Awareness month, companies allow their employees to dress casually in denim jeans in exchange for a $5 donation to breast-cancer research. More than 3,000 companies signed up the first year and many more have joined since, raising a total of $75 million in the last 12 years. This year is sure to be a great success as well.
  6. Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure

  7. This is a series of runs and fitness walks that take place across the United States throughout the month of October, as well as throughout the year. The series kicks off in Houston on Oct. 3 and has had more than a million participants since 2003. The Race for the Cure has raised a phenomenal amount of funds over the years, and has been successful in raising breast-cancer awareness. It's also a celebration of life for those who are breast-cancer survivors, while simultaneously honoring those who have lost their lives to this disease.
