Napoleon Dynamite Costume Ideas
"Napoleon Dynamite" is a quirky and offbeat movie comedy, and to fully achieve the effect of the film in costume requires that you get quirky yourself. It's not enough to merely look like Napoleon or Kip or LaFawnda, you have to become them. Fortunately, all the major characters in the film have very distinctive traits and manner of speaking, so if you can watch the film and copy their traits, the costume will be even more memorable. Does this Spark an idea?

Napoleon Dynamite
-
The strategy in creating a Napoleon Dynamite costume is to decide which Napoleon you want to be. The two choices that will bring the most immediately recognition are Napoleon in his Vote For Pedro shirt and Napoleon in his awesome suit. Both of these costumes are readily available at costume sites on the Internet. The Vote for Pedro shirt is easy to make yourself with T-shirt printing software and a printer. Add a pair of blue jeans and Napoleon's moon boots and you're set. The moon boots are really key to a Napoleon Dynamite costume (see Resources). Add a frizzy blond wig and glasses to complete the effect.
Kip Dynamite
-
Kip is Napoleon's brother and offers more opportunities than his sibling. The easiest costume idea for Kip is the nerdy white shirt and tie. If you want to really hit the Kip costume big time, however, opt for Kip's martial arts outfit. All you need is a blue shirt with the arms cut off, gray sweatpants, blue wristbands and martial arts tridents. This is the easiest Kip costume to make. To really make a statement as Kip, go for his neo-Dread Pirate Roberts outfit that he wears to go out dancing with LaFawnda. With this costume, you can really afford to do it yourself and move away from an authentic recreation. As long as you have a black do rag, tight black pants and a silky shirt open to reveal your chest while you wear a large necklace, you can pull off the infamous "peace out" Kip Dynamite look. Don't forget the wispy mustache, however.

LaFawnda
-
LaFawnda is Kip's girlfriend whose over-the-top physical appearance makes her an ideal choice for drag. The great thing about choosing to be in costume as LaFawnda, whether you are male or female, is that as long as you arrive with a Kip in tow, it really won't matter whether your dress is exactly like LaFawnda's or not. It is easy the details of LaFawnda's look because it is the overall contrast to Kip that really matters. For this reason, as long as you appear dressed in over the top hip-hop clothing, you can pull off LaFawnda. To really go over the top, be a white male who plays LaFawnda in black makeup.
Uncle Rico
-
Uncle Rico is another character from the movie where the costume really relies less on the specifics than on the feel. Rico dresses from the glory years of his life, the early 1980s. In other words, he sports bell bottom jeans and a vest. To really do Uncle Rico right, bring along a football and sport a ridiculous Loverboy-style cotton headband. What you want to bring forth from your Uncle Rico costume is the feeling that your whole life went off-track sometime right after high school and you peaked 20 years ago.
