Accentuate your olive skin tone.

Celebrate the beauty of an olive skin tone by accentuating it with the proper hair color. An olive skin complexion is considered a cool tone, therefore choosing cool hues will work best for you. Also, depending on how light or dark your skin is, you can try playing around with more fun, unusual colors.

    Choosing Colors

  1. You'll want to stay in the "cool" category when searching for hair color. Hair dyes that have base tones of beige, ash or neutral are suggested by the stylists at Styles 101. The key is in the name of the color; ash blonde, beige brown and neutral brown or black are all cool tones. If you look at the back of many hair coloring kit boxes, you will often see a diagram that tells you if the color you are holding is warm or cool.

An advantage of having a cool skin tone is the ability to play around with "unnatural" colors like blue-black, burgundy or any shade of red that has purple tones in it. Choosing these colors depends a lot on the lightness or darkness of your skin. If your olive complexion is lighter and you have naturally blonde hair, try a sandy shade only slightly lighter or darker than your natural color. If you want to have some fun, try platinum blonde or icy orchid. If you have naturally brown hair, try adding deep neutral brown lowlights. If your complexion is darker, raven black will also look beautiful. For natural redheads, remove any orangey undertones by coloring your hair a deep burgundy.

If you want to add highlights to your hair, avoid light auburns, reds and golden blondes. Stick with colors like honey, taupe and wheat. If you're still not sure of what looks best with your olive skin tone, try talking to a hair stylist first. They will be able to give you advice about what will look the best with your skin.
  2. What to Avoid

  3. There are two main types of skin tones; warm and cool. Warm skin tones usually have undertones of brown, pink and peach and look great with golden hair colors like strawberry blonde and red. Unfortunately, if you colored your hair these colors, your might end up looking sallow and yellow. True olive skin has cool green or yellow undertones, and golden or bronze hair colors will only accentuate the yellow instead of giving your skin a healthy glow.
