Oily hair is a problem of the scalp and not the hair. It is caused when the oil glands of the scalp overproduce oil, called sebum, and the excess moves down into the hair. Fine hair tends to be oilier, because having fine hair means that you have more hair and thus more glands to produce oil. Hormones can cause hair to be oily. Having oily hair can be a nuisance, but there are some things you can do to help control it.

    Basic Care

  1. Daily shampooing is one of the best things you can do to control oily hair. Use a shampoo that is see-through. The creamy ones will leave a residue behind, adding to the oiliness. Find one that is formulated for oily hair. When you shampoo, massage the shampoo into the scalp and rinse it out thoroughly. You may need to shampoo twice to remove all the oil.

If your hair is oily, you probably won't need to use a conditioner, because the oil will serve as a conditioner. If you do feel like you need a conditioner, don't use it every day and only apply it to the ends of your hair. You don't want to add more oil to your already oily hair.

Don't over-brush your hair. Brushing pulls the oil down from the scalp into your hair. In addition, brushing can stimulate the oil glands in the scalp, causing them to produce more oil.
  2. Other Tips

  3. A few homemade rinses and treatments may reduce oily hair. Rinsing your hair with a cup of water mixed with half a cup of vinegar after shampooing can help remove oil. Leave the vinegar rinse on for a few minutes, and then rinse well with water.

Another effective rinse is lemon juice diluted with water. Just mix the juice of 2 lemons into a quart of of water and pour it into your hair. Instead of using mousse to set your hair, use beer. Keep it in an airtight container in your shower to make it last longer than a few days.

If you don't have time to shampoo, put a little baby powder on the roots of your hair and brush it in. It will remove excess oil and make your hair appear cleaner and fresher.

If nothing seems to work, see your doctor to make sure there's isn't a medical reason for the oiliness.
