Spit is a card game that requires each player to have his own playing area along with a portion of the table in the center of the playing area that is shared between the two players. Deal 26 cards to each of the players from the standard 52 card deck. Each player then deals herself five stock piles. These stock piles consist of 1 card in the first pile, with an additional card in each pile until the fifth pile that has 5 cards. The top card of each pile is turned face up. The remaining 11 cards are referred to as the spit cards, and sat next to the fifth pile for each player.
During the game there will be two shared piles in the center of the table known as spit piles. These piles will be started during the play of the game and built upon by both players. -
Both players play at the same time in the game of Spit, they do not take turns. To start the game, each player plays a card face up from his spit pile in the center of the table. Each player then races to play any of her face up cards from her stock piles onto the shared spit piles. Players can only use one hand to move the cards. A card can be played on the spit pile if it's either one higher or lower than the top card on that spit pile; suit is not a factor in Spit. When a player plays his top card of one of his stock piles he can turn the card under it face up. Cards can be played to the spit piles or any empty stock pile space on a player's side of the table.
When both players agree that neither of them can make a play, they both announce "spit" and flip over the top card of their personal spit cards and place it on one of the two spit piles, with one player playing on each pile. -
At times during the game of Spit it becomes necessary to deal a new layout of cards. This happens when one player plays all of her stock pile cards or both players are out of spit cards but still have stock pile cards in some of their five piles remaining.
At this time the players agree and count to three, then they race to claim a pile of the spit cards in the center of the table. The smallest pile is the most desirable as players wish to get rid of all of their spit cards and stock cards to win. The first player to slap a pile gets it, and then the other player gets the other pile. Each player then combines her pile with all of her stock cards that were not used and deals out a new stock set up starting with the five card pile down to the one card pile. There might not be enough cards to deal a full five stock piles, and if so the piles with fewer cards are not dealt.
The remaining cards are part of the spit pile for each player. If one player does not have any cards in his spit pile, only one player will play a card to the center of the table from his spit pile to start the new round and there will only be one shared pile used. - The goal is to have no cards remaining, this includes both the spit cards and the stock pile cards. As step 3 indicates if a player is out of spit cards but still has stock pile cards the game is not over. The game will end though if a player has no spit cards and no cards remaining in her five piles of stock cards.
