- Because black hair tends to be naturally drier than other types of hair, it is not necessary to wash it frequently. In fact, shampooing it more often than every seven to 10 days can cause the hair to become even more dry, brittle and more likely to break. If you exercise or do things that cause you to sweat, try rinsing your hair. When you do shampoo, try using one with a low pH level---preferably designed for dry hair.
- To combat dry, brittle hair, be sure to moisturize daily. A simple scalp massage on a consistent basis will help produce natural oils that can prevent dry hair. Additionally, using a leave-in conditioner while showering can help as well. Avoid using a two-in-one shampoo and conditioner or any type of hair care products that contain alcohol---they generally are not well suited for dry hair. After shampooing, use hair oil to re-hydrate your hair and scalp. A monthly hot oil treatment is recommended as well to revitalize hair.
- Avoid using heated styling tools (hot combs, rollers and irons) on hair to avoid drying it out. Using a hair relaxer can help avoid frizzy hair and make the hair easier to style. To help distribute the oils evenly throughout your hair, find a good comb or brush made of natural bristles. For thin, fine hair, a long bristle is better. For thick hair, try a shorter bristle. The brush works best if it is dampened a little before each use. For longer hair, use a wide-toothed comb or pick.
