Mason Jar Planter
Mason Jar Planter

You can transform Mason jars into useful accent pieces for your home or garden with a few supplies from your local craft store. Decorate your Mason jars with wire and glass to make a planter, colored sand to make a candle or stained glass paint to create a luminary.

From Quick Guide: Guide to Jars

    Mason Jar Planter

  1. Turn your Mason jar into a planter with decorative swirls of wire accented by glass stones and cabochons. Paint the inside of the Mason jar with metallic craft paint, leaving unpainted spaces all over the jar. Let the paint dry and layer another coat of different colored metallic paint to complement or contrast with the first. Paint the second layer primarily in the open, unpainted spaces so that the color will show through, giving the Mason jar a multi-colored swirl effect. Cut 3- to 4-foot sections of soldering wire. Wrap one end in a large swirl and place it flat against the Mason jar. Wrap the other end of the wire around the mouth of the jar. Soldering wire is soft and bends easily. Fashion another swirl and place it on the opposite side of the jar, wrapping one end securely around the mouth of the jar. Form smaller swirls or elongated S shapes to add to the two remaining sides. Glue flat-backed glass cabochons and large glass stones to and around the wire with strong craft glue like E6000. Add pebbles, potting soil for planting herbs or indoor flowers.
  2. Sand Art Candle

  3. Make a candle with sand art and a Mason jar. You can layer different colors of sand inside the jar to simulate the colors of a desert landscape or a sandy beachscape. Fill the sand 1 inch from the top of the jar. Nestle a tea light in the top for soft lighting.
  4. Stained Glass Luminary

  5. Transform your Mason jars into luminaries for your back yard or garden. Paint the outside of the jar with stained glass paint in any pattern or design. You can also layer multiple colors to create a mosaic effect. Wrap soldering wire securely around the jar and make a loop over the center of the jar's mouth. The loop is your hook so you can hang the luminary. String several luminaries onto a line as a border for your garden path or hang one Mason jar luminary from a shepherd's hook. Fill the jar with one end of a strand of tiny white lights. String the other end along the hanging line or highlight the hook. You could also place tea lights inside the jar for softer lighting.
