Artists have been using easels since the time of the ancient Egyptians. Easels are used to hold up the canvas, sketchbook or other large panel the artists is working on, or as a means of displaying works of art. H-frame and tripod easels are the most common shapes, and are generally made out of wood, steel or aluminum. Easels can be very expensive to buy, and due to their fairly simple design, many artists choose to build their own.
