The witch is an icon of European history. Turning up in the 15th century as enemies of the Church, witches became hunted throughout Europe and New England. Before that time, according to many experts on the Occult, witchcraft was taken as anything from science to charlatanism. Charming warts off of villagers, treating those who caught the Plague, predicting marriages and revolutions- all in a day’s work for alchemists and spiritualists. Originally, the Church’s stance was similar to that of intellectuals today: powers coming from ghosts or spiritual forces simply do not exist. An interesting shift in theology and politics, fueled by upper and lower classes, led to the witch hunts as we learn about them today.
