Series Summary

Boxing is a sport that was developed independently in many different civilizations and has existed for thousands of years. Earlier forms of boxing allowed many moves that are illegal today including biting, head-butting, and kicking to name a few; the Greeks even allowed fighters to put on gloves with spikes. Clearly rules have been adapted for the better to provide greater safety and longevity of life for fighters. Though the rules of modern professional boxing are vastly different from the earlier rules it basically calls for two people to punch each other (above the belt) until one person is beaten unconsciousness, falls to the floor and stays down for ten or more consecutive seconds, the referee concludes that one fighter is in danger of injury and cannot safely continue, or time runs out and the judges choose the winner based upon points scored. In this free online video series learn boxing from Maryland Boxing Hall of Fame professional boxer and certified USA Boxing trainer Marvin McDowell as he teaches basic tips and techniques such as: breathing, combination punches, safety equipment to have, hand wrapping, jab punch, left hook punch, left uppercut, moving forward and back, moving left and right, basic boxing stance, straight hand punch, jumping rope, using medicine balls, sit ups, and using the speed bag and speed ball.
