A knot is a method for fastening or securing linear material such as rope by tying or interweaving. It may consist of a length of one or more segments of rope, string, webbing, twine, strap or even chain interwoven so as to create in the line the ability to bind to itself or to some other object. There is a wide variety of uses for knots and for many outdoorsmen, learning the proper way to tie and fasten knots is of supreme importance, for safety and support purposes. For rock and mountain climbers especially, the strength and reliability of knots is tremendously important, and the skill of knot tying is beyond valuable.

In this free video series our expert will demonstrate a wide variety of knots to use during camping adventures, rock and mountain climbing trips and much more. From scouts to professional sailors, everyone can benefit from learning how to properly tie a knot. Learn to tie the anchor knot, Flemish knot, and many more.

Daniel Schieffelin Daniel Schieffelin has a degree in Outdoor Education and Leadership from Sterling College in Vermont. He has worked outdoors in several stations including being a bike, back country travel, kayak, and climbing instructor in Southern Utah; working on the Appalachian Mountain Club's professional trail crew; and teaching life skills, instructing sailing courses with Outward Bound.
