Hello, my name is Kirk Wilson, and I am a guitar player in the Los Angeles area. And, I often do sessions in Burbank, and Hollywood area studios. I also teach at Orchepia School of Music in Irvine. We're going to talk about how to restring an acoustic guitar. The particular guitar that we're dealing with is the nylon version. I have a Yamaha G-235, and this particular guitar is used mostly in classical guitar, and it basically uses a technique where you tie the string to the bridge, as opposed to the regular way that you would string an acoustic guitar like a Taylor or a Martin acoustic guitar, those popular guitars that are often found in country music. This acoustic guitar is nylon string, and it strings as so: What we're going to do first is, considering that you've already removed the string, but if you haven't, what I'm about to show you, you're going to do the total opposite to remove the string, first by loosening the string to the point where it's really about to fall off the guitar, and you untie it. So, here we have these ties, where you can basically tell it's a knot. Each string basically is just wound around itself. So, we're going to pass the string through, there's a little hole right here, and the string fits inside, and it comes right through, and you pull the string completely through. Now, once you get the string through, then what's important next, is the string passes around like this. And, while it's still loose, you're going to wrap it through one time, two times, three times. And, normally this extra, I kind of tuck it to the side like this. Now, the string comes all of the way up to the top of the guitar. It sits across the nut as so, and then we pass the string through the head right here. Now, I'm going to use my speed winder, and tighten. Once I get the string tight, then it's time to tune. And, as I tune, I can still use my speed winder to get it close. And, there's the B. E, B. Many times, what you want to do is, you want to have this string to go in the middle. Or, you want to have the string go on the outside towards the hole. But, it's mainly for cosmetics. If this string goes to the right, or if it goes to the left, is really irrelevant. The main thing is that you get it around the peg, and wrapped in a nice uniform fashion to where the string is close to itself, like over here, and this string right here. And, when you string the string properly around the peg, that string will sit and hold tune for a long time.
