Hi, I'm Hilary Talbott, Acupuncture Physician and Clinical Herbalist. Today, we will be discussing acupressure for increasing metabolism. Now, there is no magic point on the body that's going to just instantly increase metabolism, but what will is regular abdominal massage. There are various techniques out there and very in depth ones too. One that like to use and we use here in my practice is Mayan Abdominal Massage and I'm going to show you the end of the, of the self-care portion that we teach all of our patients. So, you want to put your hands in an M, hook the thumbs, one hand over the other. We're going to find the center in the belly button; in a clockwise direction, we're going to begin making circles until the circle gets bigger and bigger. And we're going to go all the way around until we hit the border of the hips and the ribcage. And this is something that can be done while you're just lying in bed at night; it can be done while you're in the shower. It doesn't take a ton of time. But what this does do is it helps stimulate any sluggish in the intestines to increase elimination as well as helping your body to get rid of impurities. And once you feel the outer border, you're going to come back in the other direction; this kind of gentle palpating circles. And the, you know, the pressure that you use is really kind of up to you. Sometimes the firmer, the better. But, sometimes patients actually report being a little bit sore. And along this way, you might actually notice bumps or masses and those can be as simple as a fickle impaction. So, you want to just kind of take note of where those are and the next time you do your massage, the next night, see if it's moved. If it's moved, it's nothing; but, if that mass stays there, then, it could be a sign of something more serious. Once we get to, to the belly button again, we're just going to use a sweeping motion, again, in a clockwise direction, trying to stimulate the large intestine, going the same distance outward as before. And then, we're going to close up the circle again. Now, points that are often used with appetite control and metabolism issues are in the ear and these are because they stimulate brain function and our brain's relationship to food. So, I'm going to use this ear seed here which is a vicarious seed with a little band-aid on it so it stays on for several days. Now, the first point I'm using is the endocrine point. It's located right here in this notch close to the face and this would help if let's say, you're having a thyroid issue where the endocrine system was involve, slowing down the metabolism. And then, I'm also going to do Shen Men at the top of the ear, which calms the nervous system. It's located right here, and this is important because excess stress, when, when our bodies in fight or flight causes our bran to overproduce cortisol, which actually slows down our metabolism and causes weight gain in the center.
