I am Dr. Dicie Nathani with Holistic Vitality Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. I would like to share some information about acupuncture and arthritic pain. In the office, we use acupuncture to address pain via two methods. There is medical acupuncture where we utilize points along the meridian for example the knee. We would use local points to the knee to relieve pain and inflammation. Acupuncture it's important to remember is an energetic type medicine. There is a belief that energy flows through twelve meridians in your body. There's six on the front of the body and six on the back and as this energy flows if there is some health condition that potentially leads to blockage of energy, there is an emotional component. It could be your environmental exposure or excessive exposure to wind or heat, all of these things lead to imbalance in the meridians. Also, biochemistry, what you consume in your diet can lead to imbalances in the meridian so pretty much anything in your lifestyle can contribute to imbalance in energy which results in pain. In Chinese medicine, it may not necessarily be a local problem that is causing your knee pain. It could be a point along the meridian in the head or on the arm and so what we would do is at that point use a technique of acupuncture called a meridian balancing where we analyze your tongue, we analyze your pulses, we use electro diagnosis to assess the points and figure out where you have an imbalance and via that we are able to balance energy in the body, reduce pain and inflammation. So medical acupuncture is utilizing local points and meridian balancing is analyzing all of the meridians of the body to figure out where you're having either excessive flow of energy or not enough flow of energy. So combining the two methods gives a comprehensive approach to any form of arthritis, you know balancing the energy in the body is just helpful for overall health and longevity and local points are a more immediate or you get more immediate results and it helps with local pain. That was some basic information but find a practitioner that will offer you preventative health care by addressing your biomechanics, your lifestyle and diet.
