I am Dr. Dicie Nathani with Holistic Vitality Center in Raleigh, North Carolina. I would like to share some information about how to control arthritic knee pain. The important thing to remember about the knee joint as it relates to arthritis is unless you have some sort of traumatic injury or overused injury of the knee, generally it's related to an issue in bio-mechanics in the foot or the hip. Often, patients that come in with inflammation of the knee, we will apply several physical therapy modalities; we use chiropractic care, strengthening exercises, but also address the bio-mechanics of the foot via gate analysis. We will, you know, analyze how they walk and their heel to toe motion and if necessary, implement an orthotic so that when you improve the bio-mechanics of the foot. The reason this is important is because the tracking of the knee is affected by how the foot moves around its gate cycle. And so, if a knee is not tracking properly, it'll result in abnormal wear and tear of the ligaments as well as bone on bone action if those ligaments are torn or are affected. So, we would like to improve the foot motion as it relates to the knee to prevent progression of arthritis into perhaps correct the issue that is causing the inflammation to start with. So, usually we will implement kinesio taping, chiropractic manipulation of the foot and the knee to restore motion and then, once the patient is ready for strengthening exercise, we usually stop the, the therapeutic taping and start strengthening the muscles. So, it helps us progress them from a passive phase of care to a more active phase of physical therapy. That was some basic information, but find a practitioner that will offer you preventative health care by addressing your bio-mechanics, your lifestyle and diet.
