Hi, I'm Hilary Talbott, acupuncture physician and clinical herbalist. Recently, some of you have asked to discuss acupressure for a burning stomach. Now burning stomach is usually just overproduction of acid and it can be caused from food stagnation as well as stress or too much stimuli. So I'm going to show you just some local points that are located anatomically just above the lower esophageal flap which is often kind of the culprit in why we experience reflux or kind of a burning churning sensation in the stomach. So anatomically our stomach is located, it's really only about the size of our fist and it's located just up between the ribs here, just under the Xiphoid Process and a lot of people don't realize that. They say oh my stomach hurts and they grab down low which are actually your intestines. So that kind of burning empty feeling right here is almost always your stomach and it could be an ulcer as well. So the points that I like for this are located just on either side of the Xiphoid Process. Now the Xiphoid Process is kind of this bony protuberance that comes down and sometimes on some people it goes back and you can't feel it. So a general rule of thumb is just to come to where the ribs meet in the middle with two fingers and use a clockwise motion. Another thing that's really helpful is taking nice deep breaths all the way down into the belly because often times ulcers or reflux are exasperated by stress. So something as simple as using belly breathing and diaphragmatic breathing using the diaphragm to billow and create pressure on the internal organs can help them to function optimally and alleviate some of that burning sensation. It's really important to understand why you have this burning sensation if it goes on for more than a couple days because this could be a sign of a serious medical condition. So if you haven't visited your local physician or acupuncturist I encourage you to do so in order to get a proper diagnosis for yourself. I'm Hilary Talbott, and that was acupressure for burning stomachs.
