Hi, my name is Fred Mergen. I'm a fourth degree black belt in American Kenpo, and I'm going to show you the different types of weapons in karate. Start off with the Sais. A Sai is usually made of metal. You can swirl them around, poke, you can block, you can strike. These are very dangerous. One thing you want to keep in mind is, all these karate weapons were mostly, historically, farm tools, like your Kamas. Kamas are usually about a foot and a half long in the handle. They have sharp blade. They were used to cut rice stalks. Now, we use them to block, strike, poke, and these were some common used weapons in karate. Now, we have Nunchucks. Nunchucks are usually made either of wood, or metal. They're about a foot to a foot and a half long. You can have string, or chain. The shorter the chain or the string, the faster the Nunchucks will move. These are used to strike. You can block, you can swing them around, shoot them out. And, most of these tools were used, historically, as farm tools. Moving on to the Kali sticks, or the Escrima sticks. These are usually made of bamboo. I've seen them as wood. They're about two to three feet long, and you usually use them as two. And, they're made for striking, disarming. And the funny thing is, is the really cool thing about these is, they represent a machete. These are Filipino weapon. And, last but not least, the Samurai sword. All Samurais used to carry these as a weapon, as police officers carry their firearms. This was their weapon of choice. And, the very unique thing about a Samurai sword, if you look at it, is their blade is curved, it is not straight like most ninja swords. These are used in a lot of movies, and the most famous movie you can think of is probably "Kill Bill". And, those are the different types of weapons used in karate.
