My name is Dwan Kelsey, and I'm a Nurse Practitioner with Well Life, a diabetes clinic and educational resource center located in Raleigh, North Carolina, and today we want to discuss how to prevent pre-diabetes. So, if a patient is overweight, has a history of hypertension or high cholesterol, a family history of diabetes, one that's had gestational diabetes at some point, a woman that's had gestational diabetes at some point, comes into the provider's office with a blood sugar between 100 and 125, they are diagnosed with pre-diabetes. Those patients now are being placed on Metformin and Metformin or Glucophage for the brand name is a drug that is used for diabetes and the reason that we place those people on Metformin so early on is to prevent the onset of diabetes because we know that those that have pre-diabetes, 50 percent of them will go on to develop diabetes if there's no intervention. So, to prevent diabetes, we do the same, we talk about the same things that we talk about those with diabetes. So, we talk about meal planning, we talk about diet, we talk about decreasing carbohydrates in the diet, decreasing fat in a diet and incorporating an exercise program. Diabetes is a very complex disease. This has just been basic information regarding diabetes. Please be sure to visit your medical provider for more information or for diagnosis of diabetes.
