My name is Dwan Kelsey, and I'm a Nurse Practitioner with Well Life, a diabetes clinic and educational resource center located in Raleigh, North Carolina, and we want to discuss how to treat pre-diabetes. So, we have now termed the borderline diabetes to pre-diabetes because now it is a true diagnosis. How we would treat that, pre-diabetes can be treated with a drug called Metformin, and it is taken once a day, twice a day depending on what the provider recommends. Our goal is to prevent or even delay the onset of diabetes. Another way to treat diabetes is to really educate patients on a diet and exercise and when we talk about diet, we're talking about what they are consuming. The meals that they are consuming and there's not anything that a patient even with diabetes cannot eat. You teach them how much to eat and what to eat it with and when to eat, is what you teach and educate patients that have pre-diabetes. You teach them how to increase fiber. You teach them how to increase whole foods, whole grains, vegetables, and then that is a way to help to treat pre-diabetes. So, you really want to get people to understand that they are making a lifestyle change, and I often tell patients that it's not just for them, it's for their families, it's for the generations that's coming behind them and ultimately it's for the community. Diabetes is a very complex disease. This has just been basic information regarding diabetes. Please be sure to visit your medical provider for medical information or for diagnosis of diabetes.
