Hi, I'm Dr. Lisa Benest, dermatologist in Los Angeles, California, and today I want to talk to you about how to get rid of pimples fast. Many of my clients come to me because they want to get rid of a pimple. They have an event the next day and they don't know what to do, and there isn't always an easy answer or a quick answer, but these are some methods that you can do that might help. First of all, I'd like to tell you what a pimple is. A pimple starts out with a blocked pore. The blockage prevents the oil from coming out of the pore and the oil starts to build up and this is wonderful food for a particular bacteria. The bacteria start to multiply and when this occurs, it signals our immune system to come help fight off this infection in the pore. Our immune system sends its army of white blood cells and when you get pus in a pimple that's what you've got. It's a collection of white blood cells. If you are at home and pimple has come to a head, you can remove it yourself but you want to use a safe method for doing that. First you want to make sure your hands are clean and then do a little hot compress on to the pimple so that the pore opens up. You can even use a hot tea bag or wash cloth just for a few minutes to open up the pores. Then you want to take a pin and poke right at the top of the whitehead so there's a little opening and then gently squeeze the pimple just enough to get the pus out and the core that's underneath it. You don't want to press very hard as it can cause the infection to go deeper in the skin and create more of a trouble. Now other things you can use at home would be drying lotions such as sulfur based lotions and you put a dab of the lotion on to the pimple overnight and it helps dry out the pimple. You can also use some essential oil, something called Tea Tree Oil that's available in any health food store and this can help kill the bacteria that's causing the pimple and also dry it out. Finally if the pimple is more than the average size and it looks deeper, you don't want to manipulate it at home. You may want to go to your dermatologist's office and get a cyst injection. What this means is we put a little bit of Cortisone solution into the actual cyst and it reduces the inflammation usually overnight. Thank you for watching.
