Hi, my name is Dr. Hans Delfo. Doctor of chiropractic in Los Angeles, California. I'm going to talk to you a little bit about helping relieve arthritis pain in the knee. Arthritis occurs as a response to stress in a joint. The knees take a lot of stress during your activities of daily living. Also arthritis can be caused by several different factors. These factors include stress, over activity, reaction to injury, decreased joint space, mal alignment of the joint, and the body's reaction to the every day stress that these joints take. Also arthritis is actually a reaction to the stress in the joint. Often times as we age, the joint space will decrease and bone will remodel itself and actually grow new bone to help protect that area. That new bone growth can cause muscle spasm, pain, and swelling of the joint. There are a few things you can do to help alleviate the pain of knee arthritis. First, is avoid any extreme or repetitive activities. Avoid any heavy weight bearing activities, and do exercises like swimming, or low-impact aerobics. Something to help build the muscular tree around the knee without putting too much stress or pressure on it. Some things you can do at home is stretch the muscular tree around the knee. Also, you want to keep motion in that joint. The more motion in that joint, the more nutrients that joint can receive. Keep well hydrated, drink lots of water. If the pain persists, you can try ice therapy. A good rule of thumb for ice is 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, 20 minutes on, and continue. Make sure you don't put the ice directly on the skin, because you can actually do some soft tissue damage. The best thing you can do for knee arthritis is to go see your chiropractor. A chiropractor is trained to help alleviate pain due to arthritis. Chiropractor can help restore some joint space, restore motion to that joint, and counsel you on changing activities that are causing stress on that joint. Chiropractor may adjust the knee, fix the mal position, and also fix any problems with the hips or the pelvis in order to take any pressure off the knee. My name is Dr. Hans Delfo, and thank you for watching my video on how to treat knee arthritis.
