"Hello, I'm Doctor Robert Hernandez, I'm a licensed psychologist, president and founder of La Farfalla Retreat House. Let's talk a little bit about how to cope with severe depression. First of all, depression is something that happens to us in our body, it's physiological, as well as something that happens with our thoughts and our fantasies and wishes for our lives. The first thing you always want to do is get a full physical check up to make sure there's nothing wrong with you physically. The second thing you want to do is obtain the services of a licensed mental health professional so you can start exploring what thoughts and fantasies you have about your life that might be contributing to the depressive themes. Always remember the unconscious is reacting to your waking life, to your reality and giving you these signs and symptoms as a way for you to explore what's happening; to kind of wake up and realize what is really going on in your life. And the way to do this is to process with a licensed mental health professional."
