"Hello, I'm Dr. Robert Hernandez. I'm a licensed psychologist, president and founder of La Farfalla Retreat House. Lets talk about how to deal with postpartum depression or other mood disorders that might come up, sort of like anxiety, as well. One way to deal with that is to have the person that--the female--that has just given birth to contact her medical doctor or gynecologist. A full blood work should rule out any type of physical abnormalities or any type of irregularities in hormones, or any type of difficulties happening in the physical realm. Once that has been ruled out, then thoughts and fantasies about being a mother can be explored. It could be that the woman has different type of fantasies that make it difficult for her to be a mother. It could also be that mother issues of when she was young are also affecting this new role for her. If this is not her first child, then other things will probably come up that could be explored. But medication and exploring the themes are very important in dealing with postpartum depression."
