Hi my name is Michael Levin and I'm with everythingmotorcycles.com. Let's talk about how we troubleshoot motorcycle starting systems. Depending on the symptoms when the bike first comes in will depend on how we approach the problem. First you usually want to turn the motorcycle on, see what type of reactions we get from the motorcycle. From there you're going to want to locate the battery and be able to put what's called a volt meter on the motorcycle battery. Depending on the reading we get from there will determine the next step we take. If we're getting proper charge from the battery we'd want to there check the main fuse and from there would depend on how we would want to be able to approach it. Usually with something like that it could be, if those two problems aren't what's presenting itself you'd want to be able to move to the next symptom. Like it could be out of gas, it could be as simple as a switch. Does the switch work properly? Maybe it's corroded. What we would prefer you to do is to be able to bring your motorcycle to a good licensed motorcycle shop. They should be able to do diagnostics. Diagnostics can range anywhere from one to three hours depending on what symptoms present. If you have a motorcycle shop that's going to be reputable and be able to provide this information to you, generally that's going to be done through what we call labor time, based on an hourly rate. Every motorcycle shop will have different types of labor rate to do diagnostics on a motorcycle. We find the best way is word of mouth referral. From there we can make all sorts of determinations and sometimes there might be multiple symptoms that the motorcycle may be having so the diagnostic time is a very good way to approach this type of issue. After we check the charging system we want to be able to move on to different various methods to be able to see where the motorcycle may continue to have problems. A good motorcycle shop will generally stop after diagnostic time has been reviewed and talk to the customer and be able to give the information to the customer and relay it to them.
