How to Hit a Golf Ball Low
If a golfer is trying to hit a low iron, he is trying to keep from lofting the ball, and the easiest way to do this is by putting the ball further back in the stance. Find out how to punch a golf ball with help from a Class A member of the PGA of America in this free video on hitting a golf ball low.

Hi, this is Kevin Battersby with battersbygolf.com in Coconut Creek, Florida. In this clip I'm going to show you how to hit a golf ball low. Actually when you're hitting wood shots and iron shots, it's completely different methodology. So if you're trying to hit a low iron shot, you're trying to de-loft the club, de-loft the ball and have the ball come out in a low that you get through. The easiest way to do that is to put the ball further back in your stance, whether you're hitting a 9-er, a 7-er or 5-er. If you want to hit this ball lower, if you notice, now the ball is more towards my right foot. What that's doing is putting more weight on my left side; putting the handle forward which is also de-lofting the golf club and when I come into the shaft, the clubs can hit the ball and then hit the turf well in front. Also known as a punch shot; very similar to Tiger Wood's stinger shot. As I trap the ball like that and hit the ball in the turf well in front of the ball; it sends the ball on a lower trajectory. Also it's a very good technique if you have a poor light because the two go hand in hand. Hitting the ball low requires a very deep, descending blow catching the ball and de-lofting it. If you have a poor light such as I have here; the ball sitting down in this floor to grass; as I put the ball back to my stance, I'm getting much more descending blow and the club's, it actually hitting the ground after the ball. Watch on Sunday's TV when do the Biz Hub. The Biz Hub camera they'll show the club impact to the club on the ball. You can see the iron coming down hitting the ball and then well after that hitting the ground. Now it's quite different on a wood club to hit the ball low. If I want to hit the ball low on a wood club, I take my driver and the ball now goes more forward in my stance and what makes the ball get in the air and go high is back spin for a driver. So as I come down the ball, I'm going to hit the ball higher unlike the iron. When I hit a wood club I'll put the ball more forward on my stance; I lean slightly right. If I want to hit the ball lower, I have the club come from low to high, come study up on the ball; actually taking off back spin. You can't put tough on a golf shot having to go very far but you can reduce the back spin. So putting the ball forward on your driver becoming study up on it as oppose to the iron will make the ball go low for a wood. This is how you hit low golf shots.
