"Hi I'm Kenny Shoulars, house pro at Ten Pin Alley in Wilmington, North Carolina and we're going to talk today about choosing the right bowling ball. Years ago it was simple, the only thing you had to worry about was how heavy a bowling ball that you want to use. Well that's still a major consideration. You actually want to use the heaviest ball that you can comfortably throw down the lane and that you comfortably use because obviously a heavier ball is going to knock more pins down. So if you can throw a 16 pound ball, that's as heavy as they come, that's the bowling ball you want to choose. But if you're really small you may want to consider maybe a 10 or 11 or maybe a 12 pound bowling ball. Another thing to consider is where you're going to be bowling at. Are you going to be bowling on wooden lanes? Are you going to be bowling on synthetic lanes? Where's the most of the time you're going to be bowling? That also will decide, to help you decide what kind of bowling ball that you actually want to choose. What you really want to do is you want to consult your pro shop operator and he can actually watch you bowl and watch your style of game to see exactly what kind of ball would be appropriate for your game and then he can help you decide whether or not you want a shiny ball or a dull ball and a lot of that will determine by how fast you throw the ball and exactly what you're level of skill is. And that's how we choose a bowling ball."
