Summary: In golf, an offset refers to the club head being slightly behind the shaft when the shaft is straight, and this naturally encourages the golfer to have the bottom of his swing on the target side of the ball. "Hi, I'm PGA Member Jay Golden and this tip is how to hit irons that have no offset. Just to explain what an offset does, when the shaft is straight, the club head is slightly behind due to a little crook in the shaft. And what that does, it naturally puts your hands slightly in front of the ball which encourages you to have the bottom of your swing on the target side of the ball, number one taking a divot which gives you back spin and number two, putting the bottom of your arc after you hit the ball which makes it more likely to make solid contact. Now if you have no offset on your club which means that when the shaft is straight, there's no crook and the leading edges on the same line as the shaft; it's very important to start with your hands slightly in front of the ball and with the shaft on a slight angle which encourages the same thing that an offset will automatically give you, which is the bottom of your swing on the target side of the ball which makes it more slightly to take a divot which gives you back spin and more solid contact. So in review, in offset, will get your hands slightly in front of the ball to make it easier to take a divot and get a solid contact. With no offset, it's very important to start with your hands slightly in front of the ball which gives you that same arc with the bottom is slightly in front of the ball, gives you back spin; you take a divot and makes it much more easy for solid contact. Offset, you're in a good position at the start; no offset, start with those hands in front of the ball."
