"Hello I'm Dr. Bernardo Savariego, I'm a medical doctor specializing in addiction psychiatry in Miami, Florida. Let's talk a little bit about can the body heal after years of alcohol and drug abuse. The evidence overwhelmingly shows that when somebody stops drinking, at least the damages stops and most of the time the body can go back to normal. In terms of the liver, you have different stages of liver damage. Usually in the first stage which is called fatty liver, if a person stops drinking most of the time the damage is fixed because the liver has a tremendous capacity for fixing itself and regenerating. Now when you are into the second stage of alcoholic hepatitis, usually in the early stages it also reverses at least if you stop drinking the process is significantly slowed so that the chances of recovery are much better and the consequence delayed also in the brain the same thing happens. If a person stops drinking, a lot of the changes in the brain are reversed."
