"Hi my name is Lynn Bestul, I'm the solid waste planner for New Hanover county in North Carolina. I'm here today to talk to you about how does recycling save money. Recycling saves a great deal of money primarily by reducing space in the landfill. By reducing the amount of material that is taken to a landfill that means we are going to reduce some of the land that is necessary to have for the coverage of all the waste that is brought to it. If you take roughly thirteen hundred pounds of compacted recycling that is one cubic yard of space that you have saved on a landfill. As the prices of property continually increase, the price of landfills are going to continually increase. One of the other savings that you can possibly have is in the delivery of the recyclables, your garbage you have to pay a certain fee to have it processed. Recycling in a lot of times is dumped at no cost, because those facilities process it and sell the recyclables to a company that actually does the remaking of new materials. And some of the other areas that you can save money there may not be a dollar effect that I can tell you about, but for every ton of paper that you save what value can I put on saving seventeen trees. So that's one of the key issues is to save the environment by doing the recycling, and it does actually save money. So those are the facts I've got to you today about how recycling can save you money."
