Video Transcript

"Hi, I'm Gary Wilson, at America's Teaching Zoo at Moorpark College. Gorillas eat a variety of plants. Gorillas are herbivorous animals, meaning that they just eat plants. Although, there's some indication that occasionally they will eat some animal material also, but that's really rare. They eat over two hundred different kinds of plants. Of course they live in the jungle, they live in the salad bowl as it were. As they move through their environment, they're finding all kinds of things to eat in that lush rainforest that they live in. Now, a big male gorilla will eat forty pounds of food a day. Plant material doesn't have as much protein in it of course as animal material, and so they have to eat more of it. And that's why oftentimes you'll see the gorilla sitting in the zoo, he has a very big belly on him. That's so that he can hold and process a lot of plant material. A big part of the gorilla's day is moving through the jungle and finding food. They'll feed in the morning, and in the afternoon. And then at other times of days, they'll take that same vegetation that they've been eating and they'll make a nest out of it, as a place to curl up and take a nap."
