"Hi! I'm Dr. David Cathcart. I'm a family practice physician at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Missouri, and I've been asked to talk to you today about thyroid disease. When somebody develops hypothyroidism it's because at some point in time their thyroid hormone is slowly waned away, either because the thyroid or itself just quit functioning or burnt out or perhaps it was attacked by your own immune system that cause it to over burn or over produce and finally just burnt itself out, or maybe we burnt itself on purpose by giving I131 to treat Hashimoto's disease or something like that, so are Graves's disease. So, hypothyroidism is the end result of the thyroid that's just not functioning anymore. The symptoms are weight gain, they are dry, unmanageable hair, constipation, overwhelming fatigue, lack of energy and dry skin. So, those are the typical symptoms of hypothyroidism. This is Dr. Cathcart and thanks for letting me talk to you about thyroid disorders."
