Toxic shock syndrome is a bacteria infection. The bacteria triggers the release of toxins that can go on to attack your internal organs and then cause various medical problems. Ways that we can acquire or get toxic shock syndrome include the prolong use of a tampon, meaning that you leave it in for more then four hours at a time. The use of a diaphragm for a longer period of time that's recommended by your health care provider. And also having a contaminated wound, cut, burn or laceration. Toxic shock syndrome can affect men, women and children so we all need to be sure that we are vigilant about the care of our wounds. We need to be sure that we are washing our hands and keeping those wounds clean and dry. We also need to be sure that if we choose to use tampons that we are changing those every three to four hours and that we are using a low absorbent tampon. If you have any further questions or concerns contact your health care provider."
