Putting the kit together is first and foremost. Talking to your family about your plans, letting them know where you are going. Making sure you have safeguarded any important papers that you have. Making sure that you have made provisions for your pets. Making sure that if you are going to leave your home for an extended period of time, if you have utilities that you can disconnect, turn the gas off, you may want to turn off the electricity depending on if you have got back up power for your generators. And then any evacuation plans, making sure you have got maps on hand if you're planning to leave the area, and don't know where you are going.
