"Hello my name is Mark and today I am going to talk about GPS systems and how they work. With GPS systems, when most people think of GPS they are thinking of the GPS receiver. GPS is actually the Global Positioning Satellite which is 17 satellites that orbit the Earth all of the time. There is actually 24 satellites that orbit the Earth but 4 of them are just spares like fail safes. The Global Positioning Satellite or excuse me the Global Positioning System, the one that you hold in your hand or see in your car its job is to communicate with at least four of these satellites to deduce its own location so it will go out and to each satellite and determine the distance from the satellite one to where it is at and go on to the next one and the next one which will give it an idea of where, which will tell it exactly where it is at and that is how a GPS system works."
