"Hi I'm Tim Gipson and I'm going to talk to you about how to sharpen cutlery knives. So I have a particular knife here. And knives come in different types. This particular type is a serrated knife and then, you also have knives that just have a what I call just a smooth regular edge on that. This type of sharpener is very good to use because the way it's designed it works with either serrated knives or regular edge knives because of how it's designed. This can be picked up at any home improvement store or hardware store. Now when we are getting ready to sharpen a knife it's always a good idea to have some good leather gloves on to protect your hands from getting cut. Safety glasses are optional, I usually like to wear them just to protect my eyes. Now what we want to do is we want to make sure that we hold the knife securely in one hand, and we want to be braced against a surface so we have as much control over the knife as possible. Then what we will do is we will place half the base of the knife blade, we are going to place the sharpening tool and then we are simply just going to draw up towards you. And that way even if it would flinch you are fully protected by the guards that are in place on the tool in case you slip. And typically when you make about three to four passes you can inspect the blade and you should have a nice smooth finish or you can feel it and feel that you've cleaned up all the edges. So again with a sharpener like this whether it's a smooth edge blade or a serrated blade such as this you can achieve a nice sharp clean finish. And if you do this just every couple of months on your knives you can keep them sharp and cutting properly. So I'm Tim Gipson and that's how to sharpen a cutlery knife."
