About Modem Speed Testing

"Hi! My name's Dave Casuto and I am the director of San Francisco Computer Tutors here in San Francisco, California. Okay, in this module we are going to show you about modem speed testing. So, I'm going to show you, it's a couple of websites, one for DSL and then also one for cable. So, the one that I like to go to is called speedtest.net. So, you open up your browser, go to speedtest.net and a very cool graphics going to appear on the screen and you'll see here it's loading up, nice, little flash module and then a map of the United States comes up and it's basically looking for me, alright? It knows exactly where I am based on my IP address. So, you can see here I'm actually in San Francisco, so you're going to see I'm going to click on here and then watch these meters go as we do this, okay? So, you'll see here it's showing you where I am, right? It gives me a little message here, it says, testing download, okay? It's basically testing the speed of my downloads. So, if when you're downloading music from iTunes or if you're downloading photos. You know, things like that or downloading software. Basically showing me how fast we download. So, we can see here, here's the meter and then by the time it gets to 100% we'll know exactly how fast my download speed is. And you see here, it says, 638 Kbps which stands for kilobits per second, and then this side is my upload speed, okay, that's 218, okay? Then you see here to the right, it says unwired, alright? So, now here is finally the overview of everything. So, we can see here and it tells me what service I'm with, etc., etc. So, that's for DSL. This could be very very good, good information for you, okay? So, you can take that back to ISP and say, "Hey, you know what? You promised me I was getting, you know, a two times as much to that but speed test is showing me something different." So now, for working with cable, we can go to cable-modem.net and I am not on the cable modem so you will not be able to actually see anything from here but you can see that it give you a lots of information here.
