"Hi, I'm Kelly. I'm an aesthetician, and makeup artist, at Ulta Salon & Cosmetics, and I'm going to talk to you today, about building a base tan. There's really no safe way to build a base tan, by going out into the actual sun. A lot of people think, that if you go out into the sun, for a short period of time, and you've got some base color. When you go out into the sun additional times, after that, it's not actually causing your skin any damage. It's really not true. Basically, what a tan is, is your skin's defense mechanism, against the UV damage. What happens when we get a tan, is melanocytes, which produce melanin, which is what gives our skin its color. Melanocytes basically, shoot melanin up to the surface, which gives the skin a darker appearance, and that's basically to protect the skin ,against the UV rays, so by going out into the sun for a short period of time, and getting a base color, and then going out in the future, it might prevent you from burning, but it's not preventing your skin from getting damaged, so a good product to use, if you want to build some base color, is getting maybe a gradual suntanner, or a self-tanner, so these, you can see where he put them, which is great. They're not streaky. These you can rub them in, and blend them in, so they're going to give your skin a nice natural looking color, and the more you apply them, the darker you get. It constantly builds, the more you put on, so it's very healthy for your skin, because you're not actually going out into the sun, and getting any UV damage, but it does give your skin a really great color, and the more you put on, the darker you get, so you can kind of customize the amount of color that you get, so that's a safe way to build a base tan."
